Calendar alerts on Macbook

I have just bought a new macbook air - El Capitan. I had a MacBook pro before, which I also updated to El Capitan. On the old machine, when I got alerts from Calendar in the top right hand corner, it gave me the option to repeat the alert in 1 minute, 15 minutes, 2 hours, 1 day, 1 week etc - several options in fact. On the new MacBook, I get an alert which shows for a few seconds, and then disappear. There is no option to repeat the alert, even if I get to it in time, before it disappears.

I've tried putting the calendar on iCloud but that makes it worse, so I've taken it off the cloud again.

Can anyone enlighten me as to how I can get these options back again. I found it a really useful facility.

TIA

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Hi alisonfromulverston,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. If you are seeing a Notification in the top right hand corner of the screen, but it disappears after a couple seconds (instead of staying until you dismiss it, or ask for it to repeat later), you may have the Notifications setting for that app set to Banner instead of Alert. For more information on the various Notifications settings, you may find the information outlined in the following article helpful:
