Memories not working

Just upgraded to MacOS Sierra and the new Photos. Choosing Memories just reveals a message saying 'Memories will appear here when more photos and video are added to the library (I have over 5000). Also when choosing People I am told '0 Photos Scanned' Photos will continue scanning your remaining 5,166 photos when you're not using the app' When I click on 'View People Album' I see all the people previously identified in the old version but as soon as I click on any one of them I am shown the Places that the photos were taken and then the spinning wheel appears as though the scanning process is beginning. So far I have left it overnight but still no change. I have tried rebuilding the library. No effect. Any suggestions?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), iOS 10.0.2

Is the library your System Photo Library? Check the Photos > preferences > General. Use as System Photo Library should be greyed out.

Make sure, that your Mac is not sleeping over night while it should be scanning for faces and categories. Disable the Energy Saver.

If the faces scan is making no progress at all, repair the Photos Library.
