Q: My Apple TV won't connect

I have a second generation Apple TV that was bought and configured in Canada but I have brought it to the US and used in many times without problem. I have not used it for about the past year but i just tried to connect it in the Phoenix area, again, I have done this many times in the past. The Date and Time will not update which stops the unit from activating. My connection is through an ISP modem and a personal Airport Extreme providing an ethernet connection. I have had this unit to the Apple store Genius bar where they restored it but no difference. Apple tells me that the port providing the NTP service is blocked but it cannot be done using the modem according to the ISP. I can skip that and go to sign in using my Apple ID but it doesn't recognize either my ID or password or both. I have used them on my MacBook just to confirm they are valid. So that means it is blocked in the Airport Extreme somehow or something else is going on but I would really like to get this connected so would appreciate any suggestions.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV

    1. You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    2. Also try restarting the router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    3. If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
    4. If restoring from the Apple TV doesn't help, try restoring from iTunes using a USB cable.

If this is a new Apple TV, in addition to trying the above, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

You might also try connecting to a different network and then trying again on your own, you might try at a friends or use the wifi hotspot on your mobile phone if you have one.
