Q: Macbook air motherboard fried - what happened?
I have a 14 month old macbook air and taken great care of it in that time.
The other night I was watching a movie from a usb drive plugged into my macbook and a HDMI cable connected to the TV. The mac was also plugged in and being charged at the same time. After I finished watching the movie I saw that the mac was fully charged with the green light and I then unplugged everything, I never leave the mac charging overnight and Im very careful to cycle the battery charges (eg only charge it until its full and then unplug it).
The next morning the mac was dead and wouldnt turn on at all, the light was green when I plugged in the power cable but it wouldnt come on. I tried all the different recommended key combinations but still nothing. I took it to an iStudio shop to have it looked at (note Im in Thailand which is where I bought the Mac and Apple do not have stores here but they have a partner/franchise called iStudio that represents them etc), the shop has had the mac about a day now and just called me and said the motherboard is entirely dead and will cost almost $600 USD to replace and there is nothing else they can do.
Can anyone shed some light on what they think might have caused this? The only thing I can think of is that the HDMI cable I was using is not an office Apple one so maybe that caused it? However the mac was fine all the time I was watching the movie....
