sync only checked songs and videos greyed out

My "Sync only checked songs and videos" was greyed out AND "Manually manage music and videos" was unchecked. I found the answer on a Yahoo help page (link: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100514161749AAwFBIT):

Updates sometimes change settings (how does this happen!). Go into iTunes>preferences>general that has a box for show list checkboxes. Don't know how mine got unchecked but it did. Checked box and shazam no more greyed out sync box. Credit - Terry

Presumably you're manually managing the device and the option is disabled as it isn't relevant.

Had the same problem, went to see in preferences that the box was unchecked. Checked the box and it fixed the problem.
