How can I view Safari with almost full screen?

Before upgrading to Sierra OS I used to be able to use Safari with the window covering all but the clock. I like to glance up at the clock when I am working so I don't lose track of time. Now it defaults to full screen and perpetually covers up the clock. When I exit full screen it goes into a teeny tiny useless window. Clicking the green button I am back in full screen. How do I control the window size so I can see the full window and still be able to check the time with a glance up?

I am using Safari 10.0 on the Sierra OS 10.12, on a 13" mid 2010 MacBookPro.
