Q: when using overdrive Itunes is not recognised using latest version of itunes and overdrive. Error 0x800702E4. The parameter is incorrect. Opened itunes as administrator.

In transferring an audiobook to a new Ipod Nano from/using the latest version of Overdrive get error messages saying can not find iTunes ( error 0x800702E4) and "the parameter is incorrect". Using Windows 7,  I tunes version 12.5.1. Logged on to iTunes as administrator and have uninstalled and reinstalled both iTunes and Overdrive. Any ideas?

In iTunes under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure that Share iTunes Library XML is enabled.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

ITunes library XML was already enabled. I tried to go back to an earlier version of ITunes but when installed it couldn't access my music (ituneslibrary.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes). I then sought help on this error but felt I was running down a rabbit hole beyond my skills so I just reinstalled the current version again. So I still can't transfer to the ipod using Overdrive.

The older versions section of the user tip explains how to restore a pre-upgrade copy of your iTunes database.

I looked at this previously and have trouble identifying the iTunes Library.itl file. Here is a screen shot of what I have in the ITunes folder:

Your extensions aren't shown. It should be the one called iTunes Library although the fact that you have a parallel set of files with a (1) suffix complicates things. Check the Last Modified dates to see which was updated most recently. You could discard the other set and the .tmp files. If your most recently used library is the one with the (1) suffix then having deleted the other set of library files rename each file that you kept that has the suffix to remove it and the space that precedes it, then shift-start-iTunes and choose the correct file.
