Oct 11, 2016 12:51 AM in response to geoffrobboby Golfhacker27,Have you updated to Sierra?
Since doing so, I have the same problem. I keep offloading files onto external storage, deleting files via Trash, but the free space showing on the HD never reflects these changes. So I have constantly dwindling free space, heading towards zero, and nothing will reverse it.
Try running Disk Utility (native OSX app).
When I do this I see that the offloaded/trashed files are listed as 'purgeable files', but they are still counted as using HD space. Even though I cannot find them on the HD (using Finder). And cannot get info on how to purge these files (I have open questions running here on the Notebook and the OSX support forums).
I have not turned on 'Optimize Mac Storage' option either.

Oct 11, 2016 4:28 AM in response to geoffrobboby OGELTHORPE,Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes.
Transfer to an external HDD the files you do not want on your Mac or delete them.
Do not forget to empty trash. Only then is space allocated for additional data.
