Is iTunes 12.5.1 compatible with OSX 10.10.2?

I upgraded my iPhone to iOS10 and now iTunes (12.1.2.27) can't recognise it, even when I hit "trust this computer".

I am still running 10.10.2 because I have set up my photo library in iPhoto and it's taken years to get it right, it works for what I need and I don't want to lose that because of Photos.

So my question is will iTunes 12.5.1 work with 10.10.2 or do I have to upgrade the OS as well?

When I connected my iPhone for the first time after the iOS upgrade it let me into iPhoto and I downloaded the photos from the camera roll no problem. As soon as I opened iTunes and it didn't work, iPhoto wouldn't work either. Am I right in thinking that even if ITunes does work with 10.10.2, iPhoto won't sync with iOS10, so it becomes necessary to upgrade my OS anyway?
