Spotify Sync with Apple Watch Series 2

I'm considering buying the new Apple Watch. Many posts explain how to sync music (Apple music) with the watch so that you can listen without needing your phone with you, but does this work for Spotify playlists too?

No. I used to be able to play a Spotify playlist on my phone and control it from the watch (skipping songs/volume). Now it does not control Spotify at all. Only apple iTunes music which really *****.
