Photos shows wrong date

Imported my image library to Photos. Now a lot of images have the wrong date. Photos shows date when files were changed as the date photo was taken. I know I can change this manually, but that's a real hassle. Anyone recognizes this and knows a solution to make Photos use correct date?

Imported my image library to Photos.

What kind of library? Were the photos in a collection of files and folders or an older iPhoto Library or Aperture Library?

To migrate an iPhoto Library or Aperture Library to Photos launch Photos while holding down the options key ⌥ . The all capture dates should transfer correctly.

If your photos area collection of files and folders, the image files need an embedded EXIF tag with the capture date.

Problem is Photos _for some_ photos didn't choose date photo taken. Instead it chose the date when the files were last changed.

That is the default in Photos, if the image files do not have embedded EXIF tags with the capture date. Photos has no way to change this behavior.

You could change the EXIF tag with a third-party tool like "A Better Finder" http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderAttributes/index.html
