I've upgraded to Sierra successfully but about a week later Mail started showing ONLY the unread messages in all mailboxes. I can only access the read ones if I enter a search term. Most successful is "e". How do I switch it back to showing both read and unread messages?

Are you viewing your mail in Classic View (Preferences, Viewing, Use Classic)? If so, switch off the Classic View and in the mail list window that opens click on the filter icon near the upper right of the mail list window to show unread mail only. Then unclick it and go back to your Classic view.

Susan Woodrum's answer worked great for me (and is simpler than the selected reply.) It took me a few moments to find the little Filtering icon, which is only visible in the non-classic view.
Have you tried re-building your mailbox? Mail > Mailbox > Rebuild
Yes, I've done that 3 times, sadly to no effect.
Ok. Close Mail. Open an Applications > Utilities > Terminal window and paste the following command:
mv ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/ ~/Desktop
Reboot. If it's working now, you can trash the folder that was moved to your Desktop for safekeeping.
