Sierra display crashing

My first day using Sierra, I've had to hard reboot three times now for external display issues. Is anyone else running into display issues?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

Sierra 10.12 (16A323)

Belkin Thunderbolt dock

Dell U3415W display

1. I woke up the system from sleep, and the display looked to be running at 1 frame per second with some very weird pixelization on various parts of the UI. I unplugged the display, and plugged back in. This seemed to have fixed the issue.

2. woke the system up again, the Dell display had "no signal" but the laptop display was showing the background (the non-login screen). I tried unplugging the display, logging in, putting the mac to sleep. Nothing worked, it was acted as if there was a second display but it was not actually putting any video signal out. I had to hard reboot (the mouse didn't seem to work either - the system seemed to be locked up).

3. Had the same "no signal" issue happen about 10 seconds after logging in. I could see the "main" monitor, and then it just went to no signal. Unplugging, etc. did not work. System would not sleep (the apple logo would stay lit up). No mouse, nothing. Had to hard reboot.

I had zero issues with any of this before upgrading (was on El Capitan). I will try later by bypassing the Thunderbolt dock (since the only item plugged in is really the monitor and its USB hub), but I need to get some work done - so I've completely unplugged for now. This seems totally broken.

Have this same issue, I believe. Running two Thunderbolts from a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)

(Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB). One of the two displays will randomly go black, especially after sleep, but sometimes while awake. Also, System Prefs will crash if it's open when this happens. I'm daisy chaining the displays, and switching the connection to the MPB will cause the OTHER display to go black, but not wake it up. So, interestingly, video signal, power and USB are passing through the black monitor. So it's on, just black. But the Mac doesn't see it as a monitor. (All Desktops move to the working display.) Plugging both monitors into Thunderbolt ports separately woke them up once, but I can't replicate that now. (Yes, it's happening as I type.) A reboot generally restores both, but I have to a few times a day now.

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue after upgrading to Sierra from El Capitan, which seems directly related to the Thunderbolt dock (Belkin Express Thunderbolt). All items attached to the dock, when plugged in directly, are stable. Plugging in the dock, even with only the monitor attached, causes a crash and hard reboot within a minute of plugging in. Booting with the dock attached or hot plugging in the dock makes no difference - same crash behavior.

Like the OP, I've had to disconnect the dock for now and plug the monitor in directly. The behavior coincided with the Sierra update.

Yes, having the display plugged in via the Thunderbolt dock would keep a kernel_task between 10-90% of the CPU all the time. I have a 3440x1440 display plugged in, and the system was completely unstable and unusable. I had considered reinstalling with El Capitan, but luckily found that plugging the display in directly fixed the issue. I feel like Apple seems to pay zero attention to these types of issues. When you have a peripheral that costs 15-20% of the core computer, and it stops working between a OS version (that most would consider "minor") - it doesn't speak well for wanting to continue paying such a premium for hardware.

Nov 10, 2016 10:49 AM in response to jpcarey

But what about just the monitor and no dock? I ask, because i have the same MBP model, and an LG 34UC98 connected via Thunderbolt. kernel_task without the monitor connected hangs around 7-12% when doing 'nothing' and 45-65% with it connected and doing 'nothing'.

Filed something through bug reporter with sysdiagnose dumps in each scenario... but i haven't had a ton of good stories in filings bugs over the past 16 years :- /

I have lots of display troubles on my first day on Sierra. I'm in clamshell mode with 4K external Dell screen directly on thunderbolt. I'm on Mac Pro late 15' 2013 with NVIDIA 750M

Troubles started already during installation, where the screen was flashing on and of at a rate of about 1Hz.

In last half hour, the display went black 3 times. Two times I could recover by turning off and on the display. Third time I needed a hard power turn off and reboot...
