Click here, buy and install the DVD, and run Software Update until it reports that the computer is up to date. If you need an OS newer than 10.6.8, you'll need to go through it to get there.

    Mac OS X 10.6.8 supports iTunes 11.4.

Your Mac may be able to upgrade to macOS Sierra >  macOS - How to Upgrade - Apple

That is the only way you can have the latest version of iTunes installed in order to backup iOS devices.

    A MacBook5,1 isn't.

That is the only way you can have the latest version of iTunes installed in order to backup iOS devices.

The current iTunes version will also run on Mavericks, Yosemite, and El Capitan. The MacBook in question can run these versions.

    A 5,1 isn't late 2009, it is mid 2009 and can't run Sierra.

Thanks for catching typo, Mactracker shows it as a late 2008 (not late 2009)

    Oct 2008 - Jun 2009 sales run.

I do have a Snow Leopard Install disc and I will do that and the

combo update to 10.6.8 and see where I am. Thanks to

everyone - I will report progress.

I have received and installed an 8GB RAM kit from Other World Computing.

    Works fine.

I Installed Snow Leopard 10.6.0 and then went hours

updating until I am now at 10.6.8, which give

    me Safari 5.1.10 (6534.59.10) and iTunes 11.4 (18).

I have not yet tried backing up iPhone 4 to prepare to move that to

    iiPhone 5S.

I have heard two things that I would like comment on.

One is that it is wise the go to Apple Downloads and get

a copy of the latest 10.6.8 combo update and run it last

even though I ran that (or some version of that) via the

Software Update process early in that hours long process.

The story is that old software glitches are likely to be cured or much less

    if this is done.

The second thing is that if I want to go to the highest version

for this machine, it is way more reliable to take it to Apple

Store or Authorized Apple Provider and  do it as they have

better upgrade versions than over the web.

If I can get answer to #1 above, I will likely follow that best advice

to get the best 10.6.8 that I can get and see if I get satisfactory

    results.

What advice to you have to share.

    Thank you all in advance.
