    You don't indicate what version of Safari or OS X you currently have installed. The current version of Safari is 10.0 and in addition to MacOS Sierra it is available with OS X 10.10 Yosemite and OS X 10.11 El Capitan, both of witch I believe are compatible with a 2009 MacBook Pro.

    If there isn't an update for Safari in the App Store, you will need to upgrade your OS to get a new version of Safari.
