Repairing a 30 cinema display with parts from a 23 display

The saga continues.....

I would like to try and repair a 30 cinema display that has it's power/connections
cable cut in an bungled robbery. My plan is to use a replacement connector from a very sickly 23 cinema display.
Can anyone forsee any reasons why this would not be feasible or any problems
I might run into.

Any advice extremely welcome!

If you are planning to do a wire-to-wire splice, you will likely find yourself short a few wires on the 23-inch cable. The 30-inch features dual-link DVI whereas the 23-inch is single link.

The power connector should be the same, but don't use the 23" power supply. It will be overloaded. Can't you just splice the cable with the original connector.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The cable has been cut from midway up
and the connector end of the original cable is missing.

Would it fair to assume that the power/connections cable from the 23 ACD would still work (albeit with only one DVI
connection) using the power supply from the 30 ACD

The power cables should be the same. The dual-link only affects the DVI cable. If the 23" plug fits the 30" power supply you should be OK. Do the colors match for the wires in the power cables from the two displays?

(Before cutting cables, you may want to try the 23" with the 30" power supply. Maybe it won't be so sickly. There have been many bad 23" power supplies.)

I'm going to pick up the 30" tomorrow and I'll let
you know how I get on with the 'transplant'

The 23" is definitely a dud. A careless colleague smashed the screen with a Wacom tablet. Ouch!

Dual-link DVI is a requirement to drive the 30" panel at its native resolution of 2560 x 1600. If you only hook up one link, you will get 1280 x 800 as the only resolution choice which won't look very nice.

Ah Nuts!! That's torn it!

Are you saying I can't run this monitor at 1920 x 1200
on a single DVI connection?

Any advice as to where I could pick up a replacement for the damaged cable.

Is it the power cable that is cut, or the DVI cable? The dual-link is in the DVI (video) cable. If the DVI cable is missing its plug, you could buy a dual-link DVI extension cable, cut off one end, and splice it to the monitor cable.
