Q: Boot Camp W10 pro stuck in "Critical_Stop_Error" reboot cycle

Hi,

I just successfully loaded W10 Pro on my iMac. I was able to get through past Key code registration and hit the first reboot. I get a windows logo, then the spinning circles (loading),  then sadly a blue screen error (Critical_Stop_Error) and a constant reboot cycle.  Everything was going according to instruction until this point.  I feel like this is windows not seeing proper drivers.

I did have to reset my NVRAM to allow the computer to select the bootcamp partition for the load.

I remember seeing someone on the forums who has same computer that was never able to resolve. I cannot find the post. I am hoping there may be someone out there who can help me through this. I am so close...yet so far.

If you still have it split 1.5/1.5TB, can you post the output of

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

I'll post this tonight. Sadly i'm stuck at work currently. So update will be available about 9 hours from now. My system is off network (everything unplugged) so I cannot remote in currently.

I appreciate the help Loner T. I'll update later tonight.

    Thanks

Are you choosing a specific Windows Installer (EFI or Windows) from the USB Installer manually?

I have tried both, I have used the EFI and also the Windows option. One is definitely (i think the EFI) like a stripped down install.

    Both should be identical.

The Windows (legacy BIOS) Installer requires a MBR which is currently not defined. For EFI Boot to work, the S: (System) drive is defined as the Mac's EFI partition and requires sufficient available disk space.

Is the designated partition manipulated (except formatting to NTFS) in any way?

No it is bone stock. I do have a diskwarrior repair tool, if I need to use it for anything.

Do you have a Time Machine backup of the OS X side?

    Yes,

Before I started this whole endeavor I chose to back everything up. So yes. a two day old version.

Can you backup OSX on TM? Are you willing to rebuild your Fusion drive?

I just forced a TM backup. I can rebuild the drive. Should I make an OS thumbdrive and wipe everything? or am I just going to install an OS over itself?

You can boot into Internet Recovery which will allow you to erase the SSD and HDD parts and rebuild the Fusion drive. You need to ensure that the SSD is first (at index 0) on the Fusion drive otherwise it will cause performance problems. Once you have it re-built, you can restore your TM backup from Internet Recovery. External USB flash drive boot will be slow, but a USB HDD will be much more reasonable. If you need detailed commands for the Fusion drive part, please let me know.

I'll take instructions for the fusion drive work.  I've zapped and rebuilt many, but lets make sure we are talking apples and apples. I don't want to waste time possibly doing something different than what you expect.

    First

I still have both a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 versions of BCA tools for w10. I will keep them both.

I have very fast internet so i'm fine loading El Capitan from there. Which means we are probably booting Command-R and using the disk tool.

Thanks in advance. Lets see if we can't have some glorious victory before the day is over.

    Also,

When I re-partition do we want to stay with the 1.5TB to 1.5 TB split?

You will need to be in Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R), since we plan to erase the internal SSD and HDD, including the Recovery partition used by Command+R.

The following is an example. You will need to substitute values in steps 2 and 3, specific to your setup (i have put the values as I saw them from one of your previous posts on this discussion).

    1. Boot into Internet Recovery (not Local Recovery) using Command+Opt+R.

    2. Erase the Macintosh HD Logical Volume - diskutil cs deleteVolume 3B6D8EE3-A964-4DA8-A0E1-AFECFC278A63

    3. Erase the Macintosh HD Logical Volume group - diskutil cs delete 8BBC430C-6AE0-44C9-BBEC-CA7BDC3037E3

    4. Erase the the SSD part of the Fusion drive - diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ SSD disk0

    5. Erase the HDD part of the Fusion drive - diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ HDD disk1 (Please ensure disk1 is your HDD)

    6. Re-create the CS LVG - diskutil cs create OSX-Macintosh-LVG disk0s2 disk1s2 (please ensure the SSD disk is first, otherwise you will have bad performance).

    7. Re-create the CS LV - diskutil cs createVolume TheLongStringFromStep6 jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" 100%

    8. Restore OSX from TM Backup.

    9. Retry your Windows installation using BC Assistant.
