Q: Boot Camp W10 pro stuck in "Critical_Stop_Error" reboot cycle

Hi,

I just successfully loaded W10 Pro on my iMac. I was able to get through past Key code registration and hit the first reboot. I get a windows logo, then the spinning circles (loading),  then sadly a blue screen error (Critical_Stop_Error) and a constant reboot cycle.  Everything was going according to instruction until this point.  I feel like this is windows not seeing proper drivers.

I did have to reset my NVRAM to allow the computer to select the bootcamp partition for the load.

I remember seeing someone on the forums who has same computer that was never able to resolve. I cannot find the post. I am hoping there may be someone out there who can help me through this. I am so close...yet so far.

We are going to try a legacy BIOS installation. This mean booting from your USB Installer and using Alt/Option key to manually choose Windows (not EFI Boot) and choosing the BOOTCAMP partition created using the following command.

If you can post the output of

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

then I can provide the exact command.

The general help for the resizeStack is

    diskutil cs resizestack

    Usage:  diskutil coreStorage resizeStack

            lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode [pvUUID] size

            [part1Format part1Name part1Size part2Format part2Name part2Size

             part3Format part3Name part3Size ...]

Resize both a logical volume and one of its underlying physical volumes in a

single operation. A single physical volume is always chosen for the underlying

shrink or grow, even if the logical volume's logical volume group is backed by

more than one physical volume. If you do not specify a particular physical

volume, then one is chosen for you. Note that if this is a grow operation,

this verb is limited by the physical volume's partition's room to grow.

Specifying zero as the size asks for an "automatic" grow-to-fill operation.

If this is a shrink operation, you can optionally request that new partitions

be created in the newly-formed free space gap in the partition map.

Again, note that this only resizes one of the underlying physical volumes; if

you need more sophistication in managing your topology, you should use the

separate physical and logical volume resize verbs.

    Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeStack

             11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 10g JHFS+ New 1g

We should try the resizeStack otherwise use the example of a similar issue - Re: How to fix Bootcamp's "Your disk could not be partitioned.." fsck not working . It is W7 not W10 and the solution is slightly different.

The following creates a 'sandwiched' FAT32 partition on the 3TB HDD. It is entered as a single line.

    diskutil cs resizestack AE789475-5B0D-4163-90E4-A0729AE2CF5A 1813B344-4246-4556-9DA4-07A7C30EDB95 1300g fat32 BOOTCAMP 500g jhfs+ REMAINDER

The result should be a 1300GB CS, 500GB BOOTCAMP and the remainder is JHFS+. This JHFS+ part can be added back into the CS using another command which requires the output of

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

    after the resizeStack completes.

Please also post the output of

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

Can you post the output of

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

If the BOOTCAMP partition shows up between two other partitions, and Fdisk shows an MBR, boot from the USB and select the Windows icon and test.

Can you download W8.1 from Microsoft and run a test installation? You do not need to change partitioning or MBR and re-use the same partition.
