Q: Photos won't let iPhoto import from SD Card

I have recently upgraded to Capitan on my iMac.  I can import images from my iPad and iPhone into iPhoto fine, however today I tried to import images from an SD card.   Photos opens.   When I try to import the images into iPhoto I get a pop-up message saying something like "Photos is importing, please wait until completed". 

 

How do I get around that pop-up?

 

I have: tried waiting, tried importing into Photos, tried closing Photos, tried dismounting the SD drive in Photos Etc.  But keep getting the pop-up message in iPhoto.   I can understand Photo is now part of the operating system, but why won't it let me use iPhoto to access my SD card?   I have a certain workflow and use of the 5 star levels and until Photos provides that and other functionality I won't switch my images over to Photos.

    Have you tried to disable the checkmark "Open Photos for this device" in the Photos Import panel after Photos opens?

    I do not see the message you are describing. iPhoto 9.6.1 can import from my SD card, even if Photos is open and showing the Import panel, as long as I do not start to import the photos in Photos.

    Do you have Image Capture set up for automatic import?

    Check your import settings in Image Capture:

    With your SD card inserted launch Image Capture, then select the card in the sidebar and click the gears icon in the lower left corner. Which import action is selected?  If the Auto Importer is active, deselect it.  Set this menu to "No Application" or to "iPhoto".
