Q: The fan is on constantly on my MacBook Pro since upgrading to Sierra

The fan is on constantly, my MacBook Pro is hotter than normal and battery life is now short since upgrading to Sierra 10.12. I have gotten low battery warnings within 2 hours and I used to be able to go well over 2x that.

I have run virus scans and tried a second anti virus program just to make sure that it is not an infection problem.

When I look at the Activity Monitor it appears that the problem is Launchservicesd using much more processor power than I remember it using in the past. I am getting 40 to 73% of the CPU readings.

I downloaded and installed a fresh Sierra and re-ran the anti virus program but the problem has not changed.

If you have experienced this and found a solution to the problem please let me know.

Thanks,

Lee

Don't keep reinstalling, you are just lengthening the time that your Mac will be busy for

As stated don't keep reinstalling. If you are doing a clean install you would not have any thing to scan Also why are you running virus scans? First mac don't get virus's like windows. They can get malware but only if you aren't careful and install it - get tricked into installing or an app is compromised . Those scan programs can also contribute to the mac running bad. What program are you using to scan?

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I first used Sophos and then Avast to scan both my MacBook Pro and my Time Machine. There were 6 files that were infected and I think that they had to do with a Flash update but I am not sure. They were removed but the computer is still weird.

I am only using Avast right now. Sophos was uninstalled.

When I press command/tab to toggle between applications it does not show any application open except finder but I have both mail, safari and activity monitor all open even though they do not show up.

Remove avast and you will most likely see an improvement. When you reinstalled was it a clean install. If so did you use the macbook before instilling avast - to check the performance with and without.

I have removed Avast and I will see if that helps. I will post results shortly.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. I got the computer working like it is suppose to again.

The Etrecheck software is awesome! I ended up deleting all the antivirus software and the unknown files that Etrecheck found and all the issues went away.

    Thanks again,

    Lee
