iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case Headphones Don't Work

When I plug in the new lighting connector headphones into the iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case, there is not audio coming out the headphones. The audio routes through the speaker.

Is there a setting I'm not aware of?

Also, when I check battery status on the the phone, I only see the phone's battery and the watch battery. I don't see the battery on case. Though I do see that the iPhone appears to be charging off the case.

I have this issue too. I removed the case, cleaned the contacts, put the case back on, same problem. If the case is off and the buds plugged directly into the Lightning connector on the phone, they work fine.

I put the case back on and made a call again, and pressed the mute button on the screen. The earbuds started working. I suspect a bug. A couple of days ago, I switched the phone off of a Bluetooth speaker by using the Audio button so I could take a call with the speaker in another room. It's possible that switching away from the default audio option could also be contributing to the phone messing up the audio settings. At any rate, try the mute button.
