Running list of Universal Binary Audio Unit Plugins

Hey all,

Wanted to start a running list of plugins that are confirmed Universal Binary. We're holding out on the Mac Pro move until most everything we run is UB (which may never happen), so I thought it would be good to keep a running list.

Here's my additions:

*Spectrasonics
Stylus RMX
(Atmosphere and Trilogy are listed as not being ready for a "very long time")

*Native Instruments
NI Guitar Rig 2 (v.2.2)
NI Traktor 3 (v.3.2)
NI Reaktor 5 (v5.1.2)
NI Absynth 4
NI FM8
NI Massive
NI Kontakt 2
NI Battery 3
NI Kore
(All of the other NI plugs on the site are listed as "Support for Intel-based Macs not included but coming soon". This includes Pro-53, B4 Organ II, Bandstand, Akoustic Piano, Elektrik Piano, Vokator, Spektral Delay. We'll see how long that takes...)

*Synthogy Ivory is Universal Binary in version 1.6

We use some East West stuff, and here's what they say on their site:

------------------------------
"Intel Mac Compatibility:
Many people have been asking us about Intel Mac compatibility for products that ship with Kompakt and Intakt sample players. At this time, these players are not compatible with Intel Macs. All of these products will load into Native Instruments' Kontakt 2, which should be a universal binary in the near future.

We will provide an update for products that ship with Kompakt and/or Intakt so you can use the samples on universal binaries, but not before November 2006 when Kontakt is scheduled to be updated. Following that, we will either switch our users to the Kontakt Player that will be released after the full Kontakt update, or to our own software if it is ready for release.

In either case, we hope to provide this update for free or at minimal cost."

------------------------------

So their stuff loads into the UB version of Kontakt 2. I'm not as into this idea, but it's a solution for now.

*Plugsound/Universal Sound Bank
None of the old Plugsound Volumes are UB, but they all exist in the UB version of Plugsound Pro.

*Steinberg
In short, Cubase 4 is UB. Nothing else is. Doesn't look like Virtual Guitarist or Virtual Bassist is high on the priority list either (which is what we use).

Here's what the website says:

-------------------------------
Support for the Mac OS X Universal Binary platform

With the release of Cubase 4/Cubase Studio 4 Steinberg offers the first Universal Binary products to run on the Intel based Macintosh systems. All other current Steinberg applications do not run satisfactorily on Apples new Intel based Macintosh hardware because Universal Binary versions for those products have not been released so far. Although it is possible to run our PowerPC based applications using the Rosetta technology, one can expect a heavily reduced performance. At this moment we are in the process of developing and testing more native versions of our products for the new Mac systems. Please note that we do not offer any support for the combination of Intel based Macintosh systems and our PowerPC compatible products!

Universal Binary compatible products (updated November 27th, 2006)
Cubase 4
Cubase Studio 4
Steinberg MI|2
Steinberg MI|4

2nd quarter 2007:
HALion 3
HALion Player (retail and OEM)
HALion Symphonic Orchestra
HALion String Edition 2
The Grand 2
-------------------------------

*MHC Synthesizers and Effects (www.mhc.se)
All of their products are now Universal Binary
- Ambient Keys
- Studio Setup (Fatsondo, Voxsynth, Space Synth)
- Industrial Tones

*MusicLab Real Guitar 2 is Universal Binary (including Real Guitar 2L)

*PSP Audioware
None of their plugins are UB yet. Here's what they have to say on the site:

_______________________
Dear Mac users,

Currently, our plug-ins are available in AudioUnit/VST/RTAS formats for PowerPC (G4/G5) Mac OS X . The Intel Mac OS X version is still in development. We are currently working on porting our plug-ins to the Intel Mac platform but unfortunately, it is a complicated process for small developers with cross-platform applications. It is too early for us to be able to offer you an exact time frame when we will deliver Universal Binary versions of our plug-ins but we can promise that in the case of these two plug-ins, PSP Neon (including Neon HR) and PSP MasterComp the crossgrade to the Intel Mac versions will be free. We will also offer free crossgrade options for all products purchased after 14th March 2006. In other cases we will most likely offer the crossgrade for a very small fee.

Warm regards from frozen Poland

*GForce/GMedia
None of their plugins (ImpOSCAR, Oddity, M-Tron, Minimonsta) are UB.
Here's what they say on the site as of August 2006:

_________________________________________
We continue to work on the ports of our instruments to the new Apple MacTel standard, Universal Binary.

We love hearing form our users and we particularly appreciate your enthusiasm for wanting to use our products on the Intel Mac. Nonetheless, this is a large task and every email you send us asking, "when?" detracts from valuable development and testing time. Please drop by here and the GMedia Music website. regularly to check for updates - we're trying to be as quick, but as thorough, as we can and as soon as we have any concrete news, we'll post it on these sites first.

*Garritan
Strad Violin is UB.
Jazz and Big Band and Personal Orchestra are not.

Here's what they say at the site:

MAC Intel and Kontakt Updates:

Native Instruments has completed Universal Binary updates for the Kontakt 2 Player. The Mac-Intel version of the Stradivari is now available. GPO and JABB is being ported and encoded and soon will be made available to users as a free download. We'll post a link to the download as soon as it is available. It is expected late December 2006. Go to this link on our forum for the latest.

*M-Audio/Wayoutware/iZotope
TimewARP 2600 is NOT Universal Binary. No word on their site about porting.

Spectron, Ozone3, and Trash ARE ALL Universal Binary. Nice.

*Smartelectronix
Brams: Crazy Ivan, Supa Trigger, and Bouncy are all UB
DestroyFX: Seems like all of her AUs are UB. Check her site ( http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/audiounits.html). I think this is "Sophia", the gal that has been porting all of the SmartElectronix AU's to Intel.
Magnus: I don't think Ambience is UB. Couldn't find any news on it.

----------------------------------------------

Okay, that's all for now. Add to the list if and when you find out more!

Good thread. Thanks!

At this point, the list of plugs that are NOT UB is probably shorter.

The only major thing I'm waiting on is Altiverb and the PSP plugs; and if Logic 8 would come out soon, I could just upgrade to Pro and use SD in place of Altiverb, so even that might be a moot point.

Atmosphere and Trilogy would be nice, but these aren't deal breakers for me.

Tyler,

My Man!! Great post.

The only reason why I haven't started using my MacPro yet is because I'm waiting for some comapnies (especially Spectrasonics) to catch up. Sounds like They want to add some new features (so they can charge you more money) to Trilogy and Atmosphere away from updating to UB...

Thanks for the listing. Now that Native Instruments is close to having the entire komplete bundle UB it might be time to move stuff over.

Thanks for your post!!

Thanks Kenyatta.

I think that the problem with Atmosphere and Trilogy lies in the fact that they were actually initially built by another company. So their core architecture is someone elses. I think the problem then becomes going back to that company and working out a deal for them to port it to UB. Judging by the incredible success of Atmosphere and Trilogy, I think that this company may be licking their lips at the possibility of gouging Spectrasonics for porting the plugins. Maybe not though...
