I am using keynote 7.0. When I play the presentation and press "x", it goes to a blank screen instead of presentation mode. How to fix?

This happens when all the tools in presenter display are deselected.
Go into the presenter tools options and select the items you want to display.
Click on the presenter tools options button, top right second from left, and select the tools you want to see.

Thank you for the reply but this is not the issue. I have all the buttons checked that I need. I also found that when trying the rehearse presentation I am unable to switch from presenter mode to full screen. I am unsure if this is related. If it was merely a selection issue, then I should be able to switch back and forth. Currently, once I press X, it goes to the black screen and I cannot return to the presentation using X. The presentation is still going in the background.
Try resetting keynote;
I deleted Keynote, cleared the trash and then reinstalled from the store. Still no luck.
What happens when you use rehearse (Play > Rehearse Slideshow)?
What secondary display is connected to the Mac when Keynote is in play (TV, computer display, projector)?
How is the display connected (HDMI, VGA, DVI)?
When I use rehearse the presenter mode shows up. When I click X in rehearse the screen goes blank just like when in play mode. I have no external displays connected. I was using the new live mode to broadcast the presentation and It was working as advertised 2 days ago.

Ah now we get the all the relevant information, at last.
I can't help you with that, I have tested and abandoned using Keynote 7 until it runs as it should.
There are too many issues with this new version to be of any use.
