Hi,

I had the same problem after upgrading a 2012 MacBook Air running Yosemite to Sierra.

I followed the instructions for resetting the PRAM (or NVRAM as it is referred to in the linked to article) and it seems to have worked for my problem. Please note that it did affect my sound after resetting it so I had to restart the MacBook a second time, then it has been fine since.

My symptoms were as others have described, the black screen when opening a closed MacBook; pressing the space bar or moving/clicking a trackpad that used to wake up the screen was no longer having an effect; pressing the on/off button was non-responsive and then after 30 seconds or so, things would start happening, almost like it had been storing up the button presses and clicks and then trying to action them when it finally got round to it.

My machine had always been very responsive to opening, or button presses and clicks after going to sleep through inactivity: Anywhere from 1 or 2 seconds up to around 10 at its rare but worst response times. It is now back to the almost instantaneous response that I have been used to.

As an aside, upgrading to Sierra seems to have improved my battery condition. Before upgrading my battery was reporting as requiring a service and would run down really quickly and sometimes turn off with lots of battery remaining without performing an emergency shutdown - sometimes causing data loss. Since the upgrade, it is performing much more consistently on battery and for longer. The message for battery service has gone and though battery operation time it is obviously much lower than at new, it will last an hour or two comfortably whereas previously, after 20 minutes on battery, the sweat would start to form on my forehead as an unexpected shout down could happen at any time.

I mention this because I originally thought my battery had packed in altogether when I was trying to wake up the MacBook and nothing was happening after pressing the power key; no lights or screen flickers were showing so I initially thought the MacBook was dead.

Fix Sierra Installation

Try each of these in order. Test to see if the computer is working properly:

  1. Reset the PRAM
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volumeentry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and returnto the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  5. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.

I have been running 10.12 since the initial GA, and just in the past couple of days I have been experiencing slow wake and slow network reconnections. I first noticed that upon wake the network reconnection was taking relatively long (up to a minute when it used to take seconds). The interface is Ethernet. And then just now when I tried to wake my iMac it did not respond. The screen was still black. I thought perhaps it locked up, but then after about three minutes it awoke and again took considerably long to reconnect to the network.

I have not yet tried PRAM and SMC reset.

I have the same problem with external monitor. I always use my MBP on a dock with an external monitor (terrible eyes). Before Sierra, I just needed to tap on the trackpad and my mack would wakeup immediately. Now it takes a good 30 seconds before it wakes up. Does anybody know where we can report this? Has anyone found a fix?

I have the latest version of Sierra and the problem persists.

I too have this problem in Sierra on my MacBook Pro 2014 10.12.1 Generally this happens if I close the lid and open after several hours or overnight. I have to hit the enter key, where I used to just be able to open the lid and within a few seconds it would wake, but now I have to hit enter and wait 30 or more seconds. I know that's not a long time, but it's scary just looking at a black screen and nothing happens. Apple techs, please take note.

did you manage to fix your problem?

I have the same thing with my macbook pro 17" early 2011. Since I updated from Yosemite to Sierra, the computer takes a long time to go to sleep and to wake up...

I tried the SMC reset but without success...

I do not want to do al the rest if it does not work. I read some other posts where other people said it did not help...

Because pasting the same thing over and over and over again until get to level 80(or whatever is the max level here) on mac forums is constructive.
