Q: Whatsapp won't backup to iCloud even though I have 48G free there

I have an iPhone 6s Plus, with 64GB. I am paying for 50 GB a month on iCloud, of which I have 48GB available.

I am trying to backup and then delete Whatsapp in order to make more room on my phone but I am getting an error message that says "Not Enough iPhone Storage. Free up 2.1 GB of storage space on your iPhone to back up your chats."

This is frustrating - why am I paying for extra room on iCloud if I need more room on my iPhone in order to use it?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 10.0.2

Thanks for your quick response.
My iCloud storage is 50GB free and there is no backups on it.
But my iPhone storage is almost full.
as I know I don't need a free space on my iPhone to backup my data to iCloud.
Another way to fix it Please.

See if you can glean anything from this one -- I keep getting message "storage almost full"
