Unlock Sim locked iphone 4

I've had an iphone 4 with ios 6.3 for about 2 years now as a gift from a friend from Japan. It wasn't unlocked and didnt support the service provider and was being used as an ipod. I recently updated it to ios 7.1.2 and it requires a sim card to activate it. unfortunately i dont know the career that the friend used and have no way to contact him as well. so is there any possible way to unlock or activate it and use it atleast as an ipod?

You can call Apple care and try to find the carrier of the phone. However, from my reading on these forums, Japanese carriers generally do NOT unlock their phones. The US carriers can and sometimes do, but will do so only for the original subscribers.

I think you'll need to come to terms with the fact that you will no longer be able to use that phone for anything.
