how to open a .exe file

I have downloaded a few .exe files recently but am unable to open them.Are they compatible with the Mac and if so,how should I open them?

.exe files are Windows only applications. You'd need to install Microsoft's Virtual PC (along with Windows) to use them on your Mac.

What kind of programs are they? Perhaps someone can recommend a Mac alternative.

Thanks for reply, John. They were files which I had hoped would provide backing tracks to accompany me as I play the fiddle. Would love to hear if there is anything of this type availablefor the Mac.

You need a PC emulator like Virtual PC (Microsoft) and a copy of windows.

You can unwrap .exe files with stuffit expander. I recently did this to obtain a firmware update that was only available in a .exe windows installer. It worked fine, obviously the installer won't work on Mac but i was able to access the file i needed.
