kernel panic after macos Sierra upgrade

Upgraded a MacBook Air to Sierra yesterday. System boots up to the login prompt but during the login process it just hangs. Pressing a key results in a kernel panic.

The normal/old way of invoking safe mode didn't work, so I booted into recovery terminal and issued nvram boot="-x" to get to safe mode. The system boots and reports polling smartbattery for a while until you press a key and it kernel panics again, unfortunately the panic message is displayed so quickly I can't actually see what the issue is.

Any ideas?

Check out OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Supp… especially the section headed "Isolate hardware or software as the cause of the issue".

Also, make sure you have not got Sophos 9.2.5 or earlier installed as it is known to cause kernel panics (macOS Sierra: Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner version 9.2.5 and earlier - Apple Support).
