Just to add a bit to what Niel has said:
The major hidden folders one would be interested in, anyway this one is, are bin, private, sbin and usr. Once you have entered, say, /private in the Go to Folder option you can continue navigating normally thru all the sub-folders. Also, if you are in column view you can see the path you've taken, the folder you are in, and so on, and make an alias of even the invisible folder. I made aliases of all four of the interesting folders and put them in a folder, called hidden, in my home directory. If I want to go to /usr/share/man I just navigate from the hidden folder. In column view click my home folder, click hidden, click usr, click share, click man. So I can get to whatever I want in the Finder, and without the clutter of all the other hidden files you have when you change the Finder default to show all.
