Q: 10/11/16 8:18:33.002 PM com.apple.BKAgentService[512]: can't get sender: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 "The connection to service named com.apple.bird was invalidated."

So I have an entire Console filled with these messages over and over again, as far back as Console goes, and my iMac mid-2011 Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.6) takes forever to load when I log in. And will no longer back up to my Apple Time Capsule. And it takes upwards of five minutes or more for my Dock to load and my iMac mid-2011 display to show Finder stuff like my Macintosh HD icons. Also, Finder will no longer display icon thumbnails for images that are saved to my desktop or wherever. And I can no longer backup to my Apple Time Capsule because Time Machine stays it is in "Preparing Backup" mode forever and it never actually gets to the backup.

The common denominator - I installed all latest updates on my Mac (which was just the last latest Mac OS X update).  Beyond that, nothing.

Except that my Mac has basically gone from a great computer that helps me in my business to a complete waste of my time.

If you have any expertise or knowledge in this area, please reply. If not, do not bother. And don't bother replying the pat "Try it in Safe Mode (doesn't work on my Mac because Safe Mode makes my display post constant upward vertical lines so that nothing is readable), or try it in another user account. There is no other user account. I am the sole admin and sole user of my Mac. And that is how it has always been.

What is different is that my Mac is now acting like the 2006 IBM PC that I abandoned when I converted our business to Apple hardware and software because it was just too cumbersome and too time consuming to try to keep it functioning properly.

Any ideas - only qualified ideas please.

    Hi there Anna Porter!

Thank you so much for bringing your questions to the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like your Mac takes a long time to login, Finder isn't displaying icon thumbnails for images, and you can no longer do Time Machine backups to your Time Capsule.  I rely on my Mac daily and issues like what's going on with yours would get old quickly.  It sounds like you've done some good troubleshooting on your own, although while safe mode is only meant as a troubleshooting step and not a permanent solution - display issues are normal in safe mode.  I'm happy to help you out.

Let's start by repairing the disk using Disk Utility in Recovery Mode.

Disk Utility for Mac: Repair a disk using Disk Utility

Once you've done these steps, please restart your Mac as normal and test to see if it starts up quicker and if Finder loads image thumbnails properly.

If you're still running into issues, there is a reason we recommend testing in a new user.  The Mac treats a new user like a fresh user and we test in a fresh user to see if an issue is system wide or user specific.  It's a troubleshooting step we take to see what our next options are.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

To answer your concerns about your Time Capsule, it's possible that it needs to be updated, or it's possible that whatever hard drive errors are currently on your Mac are preventing it from completing a backup.  Let's first try updating the firmware to see if that resolves the communication between your Mac and the Time Capsule.

    Hi Brenden -

Used Disk Utility to Repair disk per instructions above. Ran it on my Mac's internal hard drive, as well as all connected external hard drives. All tested out okay.

Restarted my Mac per your instructions.

    It loaded a little faster.

Opened my Pictures folder and thumbnails began appearing. Opened a subfolder in Pictures and thumbnails began appearing, but then all of a sudden stopped appearing again. See attached screen capture.

    Hi Brenden -

Used Disk Utility per the instructions above to repair my Mac's internal hard drive. Also ran it on all attached external hard drives. All checked out okay.

Restarted my Mac per the instructions above.

Opened my Pictures folder and images began appearing in the thumbnails again. Opened a subfolder in Pictures and images began appearing the thumbnails again as I scrolled through them, but then suddenly stopped. And would not start again.

    See attached screen saver below:

I have not tried setting up another user account yet. It would be really difficult to test because all of my picture files are in my user account, and there is no other user account on my Mac.

    Hello Anna Porter,

Thanks for the update.  When you create your test user, be sure to create an administrator type account.  What you can do to replicate the issue is to copy some of your image files to an external drive or USB stick drive and then import them into the test user.

    Best wishes.
