Q: App store will not instal updates due to a network problem. How do I fix this?

The App store says I have updates and will download but not install them, In App preferences from the System preferences payne of the apple drop down menu there is a minus sign in the check box for the preference that says, "Automatically download apps purchased on other macs." with a notation just below it that says."Can't determine if automatic downloads are enabled due to a network problem." And that's it, it doesn't give any information as to what that network problem is or where to look to try to resolve it.  Which is what now has led me here hoping one of you will be able to help me resolve this.

My system specs are:

MACBOOK PRO (13-inch, Late 2011)

Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

Serial Number C0****V14

OS X El Capitan, 10.11.6

    Thank you for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities. After reading your post, I understand that you are having trouble downloading/installing updates to your apps--you see a message indicating there was a network problem. I'd be happy to help sort this out!


    There could be a few things going on to prevent your apps from updating. The first thing I would recommend is restarting your Mac by clicking the Apple  menu and selecting Restart... from the drop down that appears. Once the computer is back on, try your updates again.


    If you are still unable to get the updates installed, the next thing I can suggest is to attempt them on a different network, if possible. If you are using Wi-Fi and have the ability to connect your MacBook Pro to an ethernet connection, try that as well. If you can, try resetting the network you're connected to, as well. This can typically be done by unplugging the modem and router for the network, then plugging it back in.


    Should your updates still not install, I can also suggest trying them in safe mode. You can get more information on safe mode, and how to boot to it, here: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

    Even though the title of the article isn't specific to your issue, safe mode is still a good step to try. During boot, safe mode runs a scan of your system, and will disable certain software and processes that can cause conflict.


    If you are still unable to get those updates installed, try them in another user account on the computer.
