Q: No more access to internal HDD of TC

Hello,

I have my TC with 2Tb HDD now since 1,5 years.

It's connected to a router with a fixed IP (as in the beginning I had a lot of problems....)

Since the fixed IP, everything worked well. I mean Wifi, Internet and access to the HDD

I use it mainly to store music (Itunes) and photos, which I access with ATV, Ipad, Iphone...

I use a Windows 10 Notebook (Asus) with Itunes.

Now my problem: Yesterday I connected my Iphone to the Notebook to synchronize and to save some photos/videos.

While the sync, I got the message that the music couldn't be synchronized.

Then I tried to access the HDD of the TC and.... no access

I got a message that I maybe have no admin rights or that the session is expired. ?!?

In the network I can see the TC, but I can't get access to the HDD

I connected with the airport utility to check the status. Everything looks fine for me.

I can see the TC, I can enter the configuration. no Pb

I restarted the PC: no change

I restarted the TC twice: first switch off, switch on than with the airport utility

no change

Maybe 3 weeks ago I synchronized without any problem. I also had access to the files on the HDD of the TC.

I didn't change anything.

Is there anybody who has in idea ?

thanks

Apple Time Capsule, Windows 10

Can you ping the TC on the network??

If so try to directly mount the disk in windows explorer.. typing the address using IP into the address bar.

    \\10.0.1.1 (for example).

No luck reset the TC to factory and start again.. no files are lost on the TC.

NOTE.. the TC is beyond the ability of 5.6 windows utility to configure properly so do it from your iphone by downloading the iOS version airport utility.. and try again.

    Hello,

I can Ping the TC, no problem.

But I can't mount the drive.

When I try to do it, Windows says: Windows can't acces

Verify the spelling of the name

Sorry above translation is maybe poor, but Windows is in French

If I try to mount directly a directory on theTC, the message is: Une ouverture de session spécifié n'existe pas. Elle est peut être déjà terminée.

An opening of the specified session doesn't exist. It is maybe ended.

    I also found something interesting.

The TC is connected to the Router.TC is inBridge mode.

When I connect the PC by Ethernet to the Router, I see the TC and I have Internet.

When I connect the PC by Ethernet to the TC, I can't see her and I have no Internet access.

When Iconnect the PC by WIFI to the TC, I have Internet, but I can't see the TC.

Funny, I don't understand this. Well, but I'm not an expert either.

I'll try Factory reset later this weekend.

One question, should I do the factory reset with the Airport utility on the Iphone, or with the small button on the back of the TC ? Or inother words, is there a difference between both ?

I tend to use the hardware method.. but using the airport utility in the iphone should do exactly the same thing.

Here is my standard set of instructions for factory reset and reconfigure.

Note that if you connect to the TC directly and get no internet and no connection you may have a more serious issue.. but at least start with the factory reset.

    Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

    Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.

    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz

    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.

Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.

    4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.
