Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
I see that Pages stops responding since updating to macOS 10.12. Let's see if we can get Pages working as it should.
First, make sure you've updated Pages to the latest version in the App Store as well--Update the software on your Mac.
If your software is all up-to-date, we'll need to isolate the conditions that cause Pages to quit. For example, here are some steps to try:
- Try creating a new blank Pages document.
- Make sure you're saving the document to your Mac hard drive, such as the Documents folder.
- Try disconnecting the Time Machine volume.
This will help determine if we need to troubleshoot the Pages application or macOS a little further. Let us know what happens and we'll be happy to continue helping.
All the best. -
Oct 19, 2016 1:35 AM in response to Schofby Schof,My Pages still stops responding when Time Machine is running a back up.
I have downloaded Pages from the App Store and re-installed.
I have done an SMC reset.
These two attempts did cure cure the problem for a couple of days, but now apps not responding is back with vengeance.
Google Chrome has now stopped responding.
Does anybody have a solution.
MacBook Pro 15" mid 2012 with 8GB memory running macOS Sierra 10.12.

Oct 19, 2016 4:49 AM in response to Schofby PeterBreis0807,How much spare space do you have on your hard drive. OSX needs at least 105 free and likes 20%
Also clear your Desktop, everything you clutter on your Desktop consumes RAM.

Oct 19, 2016 6:36 AM in response to Schofby VikingOSX,It is customary for Time Machine's use of System services to offset interactive, and application performance when it is running. You have upgraded from a performance-tuned version of OS X, to the first release of macOS Sierra. It will be several months (historic pattern) before it receives a purposeful, performance-tuned update. If you are using a mid-2010 MBP with 4GB RAM, and a 500GB Apple drive, this will be a poignant paragraph.
I would recommend that you do the following as they may resolve your current Pages issues. They are no substitute for a deeper investigative dive into your configuration, and will not solve the first paragraph, or other contributing factors, such as too little remaining storage for normal system operation. Quit Pages.
- Stop and remove (per vendor's instructions) all anti-virus software that you know is installed.
- There is plenty of malware infestation opportunities, but no viruses on the Mac.
- Anti-virus software conflicts with the normal macOS security processes, and destabilizes the Mac
- If it exists, move the com.apple.iWork.Pages item to the Trash from your /User/yourname/Library/Caches folder.

- Shutdown your Mac. Boot into Safe Boot mode (much slower to boot). Try Pages. Reboot normally. Try Pages again.
- Download, and run the free Malwarebytes anti-malware tool. It may find malware that is impacting the normal operation of your Mac, and will offer to remove it. If anything is found and removed, reboot your Mac afterward.
- Many of us use this tool, and receive no special consideration, or compensation for its recommendation.
Any improvements to Pages usage?
- Stop and remove (per vendor's instructions) all anti-virus software that you know is installed.
