Facebook notification issue

Something seems odd with the Facebook notifications in macOS Sierra. I suddenly had an issue that whenever there is a notification in Facebook and my Mac notifies me about it, the notification banner on the upper-right hand corner of the screen says that I have 200+ (about 278) notifications pending. Also, Notification Center displays 200+ notifications.

I checked the notification in Facebook and I only had 1 notification, not 200+ as displayed by the banner and in Notification Center. It is as if that 1 notification in Facebook is multiplied by more than a hundred-fold in Notification Center.

I tried deleting my Facebook account (via the Internet Accounts tab in System Preferences) and creating it again, but to no avail. For now, I just unticked the Notification check box under Facebook's Internet Accounts settings to stop the notifications.

I hope that there's someone that could help me with this issue. Thanks in advance.

I too, am experiencing this issue.

MBP late 2011 running MacOS Sierra 10.12.1

I tried scrolling through my older notifications and "mark[ing] all as read" to no effect. Before disabling FB notifications, I currently had 59 unread notifications that displayed each time a single notification comes in. Trying to delete the duplicated notifications from notification center appears to have no effect.

Regarding the cause, no idea. Unfortunately, no one has been able to input for what could be the cause of this particular issue. All I can see from the replies is that this is brought about by upgrading to macOS Sierra. The client (or whatever link) that links the OS to Facebook for data may have a problem. This issue could also be from Facebook's end; they may have done some "magic" that caused this problem to occur in macOS Sierra. This is not the first for Facebook has done something for third-party softwares. Messages in macOS (or OSX) before can be used as Facebook Messenger; however, Facebook shut down the client to make it possible.

I would suggest to uncheck the Notifications check box of Facebook located in Internet Accounts under System Preferences to cease the notifications. That's the only remedy as of now in order not to flood the Notification Center with multiple Facebook notifications.
