Facebook notification issue

Something seems odd with the Facebook notifications in macOS Sierra. I suddenly had an issue that whenever there is a notification in Facebook and my Mac notifies me about it, the notification banner on the upper-right hand corner of the screen says that I have 200+ (about 278) notifications pending. Also, Notification Center displays 200+ notifications.

I checked the notification in Facebook and I only had 1 notification, not 200+ as displayed by the banner and in Notification Center. It is as if that 1 notification in Facebook is multiplied by more than a hundred-fold in Notification Center.

I tried deleting my Facebook account (via the Internet Accounts tab in System Preferences) and creating it again, but to no avail. For now, I just unticked the Notification check box under Facebook's Internet Accounts settings to stop the notifications.

I hope that there's someone that could help me with this issue. Thanks in advance.

Ok, in finally found a simple fix for this.

1. disable all facebook related notification settings in system settings -> notifications.

2. remove your facebook account from system settings -> internet accounts.

3. remove all facebook related objects from your keychain and restart your mac.

now comes the magic 🙂

4. log on to facebook, you will be asked if you want to use this account for mac system integration, click on later.

5. in facebook go to settings -> security -> where you're logged in -> delete all old session, especially the ones under "Apple OS Integration".

6. clear safari cache and restart your mac.

7. log on to facebook, you will be asked if you want to use this account for mac system integration, this time click ok and check the notifications setting, if everything ok, restart your mac once again.

This worked for me, it seems facebook keeps old sessions still active, i had 67 active "Apple OS Integration"- Sessions and you will get a notification for every single one of them.

If you use iOS devices and cleared evrything under the "where you're logged in" tab, you have to put in your credentials on the devices again.

I also started experiencing this issue on my Mac after the Sierra update (lucky number 34). So, I worked with an Apple support team member and, after they conducted a data scan of my computer while the issue was occurring (i.e., while a Facebook notification popped up), they got back to me that Apple is investigating the issue as they have received numerous other reports of this occurring. They suggested keeping my Mac up to date as a resolution may come through with an update, or information on the Apple Support Site. So, essentially, at this moment, there is no solution but Apple is working on it and hopefully there will be an update that has a fix soon.

Why so sloooooooow? Sierra was launched 4 months ago. Beta version was much earlier. Notifications are one of the major features of MacOS and they can't fix it!?

Either they have not enough resources - what I doubt,

or they work on the Next Big Thing - what I doubt as they cannot bring anything reasonable since iPad

or ... they have to work to solve even bigger issue than FB notifications - what is very likely.

I've been a loyal user of Apple products for over decade but the level of pride and satisfaction has gone long time ago. Sadly

I can't believe this issue is still on-going. I've had this issues on all of my Macs, MBA 11", iMac 27", nMBP 15", all of them running Sierra. The numbers I get for Facebook Notifications vary, and oddly enough it changes every time I contact Facebook Support team.

Speaking of which, I did reach out to Facebook, in hope they might be able to help me with the issue. But their response, least to say, was empty. It just restated the notification counts and lasted less than 2-3 days. For the time being, the only solution would be turning off notification via system preferences.

Not that this particularly matters now that there appears to be a workable fix, but...

I recently installed an SSD in my iMac, and as such installed the OS afresh. I don't have the issue post-install (had ~60 notifications per actual event pre).

I disabled notifications on the old install for a while; I'm not sure how long. Perhaps if there's some timeout on those sessions from FB's side, that could explain this.

Dang, I tried this fix a couple times (with both Chrome and Safari), and it hasn't worked. I don't get 60-something notifications like before, but still about a dozen. Is there anything I could be doing wrong? Has it worked in every case of people trying it?

One thing it DIDN'T prompt me to do was to integrate with the Mac system once I've logged back to facebook on Safari. I had to do add the account back by hand in System Preferences. I've resorted to turning the notifications off again.

Additional info:

I have an app called Go for Facebook. It is an app that lets me display Facebook without opening my browser (Safari). I tried uninstalling the app and activating the Notification check box of Facebook under Internet Accounts, but the issue still persists.

Update:

I did the NVRAM and SMC resets, but the issue still persists.

Many thanks for replying on this post by the way.

I followed your suggestion regarding on booting my Mac on safe mode, but unfortunately the issue persists. I just got a notification or two and the banner displayed about 300 notifications received. I again sent 1 message using my mother's iPad, and the banner displayed 120+ notifications received. The Notification Center will show a long list of Facebook notifications amounting to the same number displayed on the notification banner.
