Q: Facebook notification issue

Something seems odd with the Facebook notifications in macOS Sierra. I suddenly had an issue that whenever there is a notification in Facebook and my Mac notifies me about it, the notification banner on the upper-right hand corner of the screen says that I have 200+ (about 278) notifications pending. Also, Notification Center displays 200+ notifications.

 

I checked the notification in Facebook and I only had 1 notification, not 200+ as displayed by the banner and in Notification Center. It is as if that 1 notification in Facebook is multiplied by more than a hundred-fold in Notification Center.

 

I tried deleting my Facebook account (via the Internet Accounts tab in System Preferences) and creating it again, but to no avail. For now, I just unticked the Notification check box under Facebook's Internet Accounts settings to stop the notifications.

 

I hope that there's someone that could help me with this issue. Thanks in advance.

    Just chiming in to say I'm starting to experience this too.

     

    My count is 49 for every 1 real notification received.

    Me too on my 2012 Macbook Pro & iMac, 200+ notifications every time.

    Also, a few months ago the notifications stopped showing the message and just saying "new notification"; c'mon Apple, fix this.

    I have the same issue with FB notifications. But I 'only' get 19 of them per event.

     

    This is new behaviour with Sierra for me.

    Same problem for me. Only with facebook.

    Yeah, same here: every FB notification makes ca. 30 notifications show up in mac os. I turned off notifications but it is a very odd thing, has been going on for about a week (i.e. when i updated to sierra it was working fine initially).

    Yes, initially the FB notifications worked fine like before in macOS Sierra.

    Same here, hundreds of notifications about my own comments alone.
    Receive one message, result: 157 notifications...

     

    Apparently this only happens with Facebook notifications, so maybe we have to look at Facebook and not at Sierra...

    Same issue here. The number for me is 38 notifications.

    We should consider this; a very good input. With regards to your speculation, I think macOS (not exclusive to Sierra but also to previous versions) is using a client that lets the device connect to Facebook's server.

     

    Kind of like Jabber in the Mac's Messages app before. Facebook has shut down last year (I think) all third party clients that enabled third party apps to link to their server; therefore, Mac's Messages, being a third party app to Facebook, can and will never be linked to Facebook's server and be used similar to Facebook Messenger.

     

    If the problem is not connected to macOS Sierra, then the issue may well be from Facebook. The client that connects Facebook to our Macs may have a problem. Sierra did not come along with this issue on its release and after it; the problem manifested just about a week ago to some, and to others within this week. If the problem was brought about by installing Sierra, then the issue should have manifested upon upgrading.

    Thanks for acknowledging this, James.

     

    Facebook is rather notorious when it comes to changes to their APIs, anybody using Wordpress/Jetpack auto-publishing to Facebook knows that ;-) It may very well be that shortly after the Sierra release, Fb performed some magic with unwanted results...

    Same issue here. Hundreds of FB notifications for 1 actual notification on my Late 2013 27" iMac running MacOS Sierra. My mid 2015 MacBook Pro Retina on Sierra has not been affected as of yet!!
