Finder not updating contents

MacOS Sierra on Macbook Pro 2012:

1. I add a photo to a folder. The photo is clearly visible in the folder.

2. From a browser I click on 'Browse' button to add the photo (to a Facebook post for example).

3. I navigate to the folder containing the photo but it is not shown there. Viewing the folder in the Finder however, the photo is there.

For some reason the folder contents are not updated immediately when accessed through a browser. It might take several hours, even a full day for the photo to appear. I have done this with Safari, Chrome and Firefox with the same results.

Does anyone have any idea what might be behind this?

Hi there, zestie!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I am understanding that you are having trouble accessing new files from within Finder, but only if you do so when attempting to upload the file through a browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc). I'm happy to help!

There could be a few things going on to cause this. To get started, I recommend restarting your Mac by clicking the Apple  menu and selecting Restart... from the drop down. Once the computer is booted again and you're logged into your user account, try accessing files from within a browser.

If the issue persists, the next recommendation I have is to attempt to access those while in safe mode. The article linked below will provide some additional information on safe mode, and help you get booted to it.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

Even though the title of the article isn't specific to your issue, safe mode is still a good step to take. During boot, safe mode runs a scan of your system, and will disable certain software and processes that could be causing a conflict. Once in safe mode, try to access your files through a browser. Make note of your results, and restart the computer (using the above method), then try again.

Should you still be having some trouble, the next thing I would suggest is to try again in a new, test user account. The following article has information on why this can be helpful, as well as instructions on setting up and switching to another user.

Have a great day!
