How can I identify which carrier my iphone 4 belongs to so as to activate it since its been locked after ios update? Its a gift from a friend in Japan, and Apple is yet to officially introduce its products in Nepal. Also there is no way to contact that friend!

You can contact Apple care. You need to be aware that Japanese carriers historically have NOT unlocked their iPhones. It is very likely you will never be able to use that phone.

Thank you! but since we dont have Apple in country, we obviously do not have Apple care here. Because my lilttle brother has been using it for music and games, i really want it to work. So if you could provide some other alternatives or help, i would be much thankful.
There are no alternatives. You will need a SIM from the carrier it's locked to in order to activate it. The SIM does not have to be tied to an active line of service, but it must be present and from the correct carrier.
