Macbook - I need a Greek font... not Unicode

I think I know the answer to my question but thought I would post just in case a miracle has happened...

I teach Greek & for years have used various Greek fonts on my different notes & handouts. I recently moved over to a Macbook because a number of friends said how much better than a PC it is... However, I now come to teach again & have found that my Macbook doesn't recognise my previous Greek font or even the basic PC font 'symbol'...

The only solution that seems to be offered is 'convert your documents to Unicode' which sounds so simple, "hey just 'convert them", but what I think that means for me is 'completely retype all your teaching notes, handouts & presentations from scratch using the Greek keyboard option...' which is simply impractical; I have hundreds of pages & slides ...

If that is the only option then I think me & my Macbook will have to part company...

Here are a couple options:

+Double check that whatever you have been using does not over a conversion app or service, such as

+Try different apps. MS Office, especially older versions, will sometimes still work with legacy non-Unicode fonts.

Otherwise I think the best solution would be to go back to your old equipment. Apple moved to Unicode 15 years ago and support for non-Unicode stuff has now pretty much totally disappeared from its OS and Apps.

I hope you are encouraging your students to use Unicode Greek, as I think it has been the standard for a number of years now.

thanks for posting your question, AdrianLKB. Your Macbook and you can stick around longer...what you could is to zap pram or reset the SMu/PMC as starting steps*. in Fontbook, which is how your Mac keeps track of your fonts, you could

choose validate fonts. Find Fontbook, then open it up. click on a font, then press command (or cloverleaf) and A to choose all fonts, then from the top menu (file menu) choose validate all fonts. Also starting up in Safe Mode(holding down the shift key immediately on startup) will clear the font cache and rebuild it??...

hopefully anything I've written might be helpful. If you don't like the standard Greek font built in, pretty much any trutype font will work. Download it and when it's done, click on it, and the OS will ask you if you want to import it into Fontbook

and that's it...it should be available to use pretty quickly

good luck

* you can find out how to do this on Apple's support webpage or if you can't wait like me, google or yahoo works fine.

Convert all of that to Unicode? Yeah, like that's gonna happen....

Anyways this part of the forum, which is user-to-user is for Mac Pro's, the tower mac, and you have a macbook pro, which is more of a notebook. If you want better service in future, please consider posting your question in the correct forum so that we can help you better

PS The free Office clones, OpenOffice and LibreOffice may also be worth trying.

What is your previous Greek font? I might try to get a copy and see if I can make it work somewhere. I have not made much progress myself in the 50 years since I first studied Ξενοφώντος Κύρου Ανάβασις, but I go back to the language every now and then.
