If you bought the computer new within the past 90 days, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. You can find out about that by clicking Complimentary AppleCare Support. In addition, if you have not already I STRONGLY recommend buying AppleCare which will lengthen your warranty from 1 year to 3 and also provide 3 years of telephone support.

Is it your GPU, my guess is yes however you need to take it in to be professionally diagnosed!

Apple care plan will be purchased before warranty runs out, that goes without a question

I am thinking it is GPU as these funny lines appear. Before blue lines which was second shout down, on previous one lines were red

not sure what to think about it at the moment. everything else is working fine, I am not experiencing any other issues. Mind you after first sleep wake failure I don't put my Mac into sleep mode any more. I am shutting it down but then these lines appear.

Were it a one time deal I'd say don't worry but since it has happened several times you should return to the store. I hope you bought it from Apple because within 14 days you can walk in with that probably defective computer and walk back out with a new one. If you purchased it elsewhere you may not be able to return it without being charged a restocking fee or having to accept letting them repair it.

So last night I left mac in sleep mode for close to 8 hours..

got home today no sleep wake failure (happened only once)...shut it down and no funny lines like above

one thing I don't do, or should I, is when I click on shut down and clock is ticking down, is wait for it to finish count down..

Should I wait for it? are there running programs/processes need to close before mac shuts down (like windows) or not

Do not worry, it is a problem with the osX sierra, it is NOT a fault in your iMac. It will not happen every time, so whatever is different in a 'good' session, will make you think it's because of that. It is not. If you downgrade to 'El Capitan' you will no longer have this problem but another one at startUp. That proves it is not the video card, not the screen, not the hardware. But it scares the user into thinking it's the computer. You are not alone, the problem is discussed in the topic : (Re: iMac 27" 5K Late 2015 screen artefacts on shutdown)
