Q: Which free email services work best with Mail.app?

I need to set up some new email accounts that I will access using Mail.app and I'd like to know which work most smoothly with the application. For example, I understand that Gmail has certain idiosyncratic features that don't work well with desktop clients. What about Yahoo? Outlook.com? Mail.com?

Apple designed Mail.app to specifically cope with those idiosyncratic features. For example, Gmail's nonstandard IMAP implementation is no longer a concern.

Of course iCloud Mail would be "best", and it's free also.
