iCloud not syncing Calendar app between iPhone 4 iOS 7.1.2 and Mac running Sierra?

I just installed Sierra on my Mac and am discouraged to find that the Calendar app will no longer sync through the iCloud between my iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.2 and my Mac. Has anyone found a way around this besides going back to El Capitan or have I reached the end of compatibility and have to upgrade to a newer phone that can run iOS10?

Try toggling Calendar on/off under iCloud.

Thank you for the suggestion, I tried this and was not successful. I have also tried signing out of icloud on both my phone and Mac and then restarting them but that did not work either. Any other suggestions?
