Q: Please read

I am a victim from a robbery incident and got my phone robbed, the robbers fled after beating me on the ground.

 

1. I quickly use a website version of find my iphone to locate the phone, it is turn off, meanwhile calling 911. I set the phone to lost mode, it prompt a security message ask me to set a passcode(I didn't have a passcode), I did and also set up "play sound" "notify me when found" also a message indicating " This phone has been lost please call ***" and the phone will send me the location each time it was connected to a network( This is why I did not immediate call the phone carrier and ask them to stop the data.)

 

2. Officers stop by , took me to the station I wrote a statement about the incident. I went home, still trying to look up the phone location. The phone was online and send me the location the next day, I provided the location of my phone to the detective, constantly, cause the phone went off and on. Many time the phone was online indicated the accurate address, its parking lot , a resident address, a burger king...I did not go hero to confront the robbers or whoever might carry the phone, I provided all informations to the detective, fortunately, someone call me on the screen message, I did not pick up, I gave the caller number to the detective, and detective was able to retrieved my phone.

 

3. I do not know how many attempts they try to break the code, but when I got my phone back, Nothing was erased, my phone is no different than before.

 

Questions:

 

1. If I did call my data carrier and ask them to stop the service of my lost device, which mean I shut down the network of the phone, it might not be able to send me location? Or, if they took out my SIM CARD, can I still be able to track it?

 

2. Can authority still track my phone if Serial&Imei was provided without the support from icould find my iphone?

 

3.I did check variety of article, some says icloud passcode could be bypass, some says different, If my icloud passcode is indeed bypassed, will I be able to still see my device on "find my iphone" app?

 

4. If location is to be sent only with a valid network( how can people connect to a wifi if the phone is locked?) Find my iphone is only to protect our privacy?

    I'm sorry to hear of your recent ordeal, and happy to hear your iPhone was eventually retrieved and safely too.  Many times I see folks come on these forums to ask what to do about their lost or stolen iPhones with no report that it was ever retrieved as in your circumstance.

    I believe the iPhone would still be able to sent its last location if connected to WiFi network.

    I can't say if it could still be tracked with those two pieces of information but it would help with the investigation, e.g. if your phone was retrieved from someone they can then match the serial and/or the IMEI numbers to your phone.

    Hard to say, because if they had successfully bypassed your password, they might've been able to wipe the phone clean from then.

    If the phone is turned on and connects to a local, unlocked WiFi.
