Q: Macbook Air 13" (mid2012) - screen freezes many times a day after El Captain update

Hi everybody. Here is a long-long time Mac user (my first Mac was a LCII...). But now my Macbook Air is getting more and more upset.

After the El Captain update, I have 3x, 4x or more times a day a freezed screen. It looks pretty weird. I almost can't work safely now on my Macbook. After the freezes, I have to force shutdown...

Here is my Macbook Air basic configuration:

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012)

Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB (13.3-inch 1440 x 900)

MAC OSX El Captain 10.11.6 (15G1004)

Here is a photo of my last freezed screen, this afternoon:

Can this be fixed? Or it's one more of those "you have to buy a new logic board for this Macbook Air" issue?

Thanks a lot for any help, hint or idea on what's going on.

Best,

Andre

    Howdy thereandremartins.br,

It looks like you're getting some pretty extreme graphical anomalies. I would start by resetting your NVRAM and your SMC in that order and testing it out again:

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

    and

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If the issue persists then boot to safe mode to clear some system caches as well as perform a disk check and repair if needed:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

    Starting up in safe mode

Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.

    1. Start or restart your Mac.
    2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
    3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

Once you boot into safe mode, restart the computer and test it out again. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, let us know how that goes.
