presenter mode not working

The last two times I have used my MacBook Air (about 5-6 years old) with Keynote hooked up to a projector could not get presenter mode to work. Was at different venue each time with different projector. Second time this happened the guy hooked up to the projector before me (with his MacBook and his cables) had presenter mode working fine. When I hooked up and hit play the projected screen looked as it should but my laptop screen looked the same as the projected screen (unable to see my notes or a preview of the next slide). Settings were correct (all boxes checked correctly in the presenter mode edit view). After my talk was over (had to do it without presenter mode), we tried played around with it. When I was unplugged from the projector, and was in "practice presentation" mode on the laptop, then plugged in the projector AFTER being in practice mode, it worked correctly. But- I've never had to do this before. In the past. Plug in the projector and it play and I was good to go.

What's going on?

Agree with all the above. Sometimes (and for no particular reason), a projector will not 'see' a Mac. I have also had cases where some adapters were temperamental. Restarting the Mac with the projector switched on and hunting for the video signal will solve the problem in 99% of the cases.

Once you know you have a signal, then the tips above will work. Other tip: if you get your slides on your laptop and your notes on the projector, then typing X will swap the displays.
