Ipod 1.2.1 Update

So I updated to 1.2.1 and now my iPod no longer works. Yes, I have try the 5 R's, reinstalled the software several times, have restored the OS to 1.1.2 (only version I can find before 1.2.1) and re-installed 1.2.1.

After 1.2.1 update, iPod starts playing a song and after a couple of minutes, it resets. This only happens if running on battery (yes it is fully charged). If I restore to OS 1.1.2 (no extra battery charge) the iPod plays without restting itself randomly. If I upgrade again (no extra battery charge) the problem occurs again.

Unfortunately I can not locate any OS between 1.1.2 and 1.2.1
OS version 1.1.2 does not support some of my files in iTunes. It will not sync all of my video podcasts and also does not sync all of my music. It indicates that my system is not authorized to transfer these files (they worked before this update issue).

There has to be some type of bug with this update. Also if I use an external battery like Belkin, it works fine without resetting when using iPod OS 1.2.1. It also continues to work if plugged into base charging station. AGAIN - if I return the iPod OS to 1.1.2 - it works fine without any reset issues - under its own power - no external battery OR charging station attached.

Fustrated I called Apple tonight and after 15 minutes (actually pretty quick) on hold I was able to reach someone. She asked the basic questions 5R's etc and placed me on hold while she looked up something. Unfortunately I was disconnected and NOW they are closed!!

Grrrrrrr

Can anyone suggest what I can do other than turning my 60GB iPod into a fancy paper weight??

Any ideas why some songs no longer sync?
Any ideas why some podcasts do not sync even thought they are checked and settings are to sync everything?

Attention Apple - I will PAY for support. I just tried. I need this fixed. I find no posting regarding any known issues with this update from Apple - only postings from fellow owners with 1.2.1 issues too.

Thanks

I found a site that may take me back to 1.2.

http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/ipod/topic2401.html#dec31

Here's the text of what Paul Constantine found.

I have been able to "downgrade" my 1.2.1 firmware to 1.2, which does NOT list playlists with no content on my Pod. Keep in mind that we're talking about a "5.5G, video" model Pod). Here are some hints about doing it:

The actual updater files are located in:

~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/

Here are my file names:

iPod_25.1.2.ipsw.signature
iPod_25.1.2.1.ipsw.signature
iPod_25.1.2.1.ipsw
iPod_25.1.2.ipsw

I have "heard" that there can be "iPod_13.1.2.ipsw" files for the 1.2 update.

There are 2 tricks: first make sure ONLY the 1.2 files are in there. Second, you MUST disconnect from the Internet. There are many ways to do that, what I did was use System Prefs to turn TCP OFF, than log out and back in with the shift key held down. You will have to do a "restore" and go through the process of re-loading all content, but after dealing with some messages about a later update being available, you will end up back at 1.2.

However, another big barrier is whether you HAVE the right files to revert. Obviously, Apple won't provide older versions. The only real reason I HAD the 1.2 files was because I did try a full restore (the first day I had the Pod) to maybe correct another annoying bug; if I hadn't done that I would have had to search "other" sources for the files.

I haven't tried it yet. When I do, I'll try to post an update.

provibe~

I was unable to find an update for a previous version at the time. The only one I could locate was something like 1.1
The previous versions to 1.2.1 are part of iTunes, so it is tough (at least I was unable) to locate an update w/o iTunes.

Even though the 1.1 versions worked - my iPod would not sync certain files. I ended up talking to Apple Tech Support and they had me send in my iPod. For a fee of $29.99 I got a replacement iPod (refurb) - which by the way looked NEW.

I have not have the courage (lol) to update to the newest version yet - if its not broke don't fix it.

BTW - I lost about a dozen songs. They would not sync and iTunes indicated I was not authorized (the iPod) for these files. I purchased them from iTunes and the files were still on the same system that downloaded them. I couldn't figure out what was wrong - I deleted them - Grrr.

Good News! I was able to revert back to 1.2. I had the following files in my "~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates" directory.

iPod_13.1.2.ipsw
iPod_13.1.2.ipsw.signature
iPod_13.1.2.1.ipsw
iPod_13.1.2.1.ipsw.signature

I closed iTunes and moved the 1.2.1 files to another directory leaving:
iPod_13.1.2.ipsw
iPod_13.1.2.ipsw.signature

I then unpluged my network cable, started iTunes and plugged in my iPod. I clicked the restore button and iTunes warned me that there was a newer firmware on my iPod than what it had available. It also apologized that it couldn't connect to the internet to get an update. I told it to go ahead and soon I had a working iPod again.

I had the 1.2 files because I have an earlier version of the 5th Gen iPod. Why can't Apple provide this fix for their customers. It's obvious that iTunes was programmed to accept this condition and allow the downgrade.

I'll give Apple a little time to respond. If not, I'll provide my 1.2 files to anyone who needs them. Just let me know. I am monitoring this thread for updates.

Thanks

So... I didn't do anything wrong then?

Contrary to the Apple Service store advcie there is nothing I can do short of retro-installation!

APPLE - HURRY UP AND FIX THIS STUFF!

I am SICK TO DEATH of possibly may be sometimes never - oops I do recognise this pod after all!

With 2 pods and about £500 invested in this household I would appreciate a bit more official help - why should we users provide our own fixes - Techies get paid great wages to do this stuff... oh, I see now! We are free....

Thnkas guys, I shal do the retro install and see if that fixes the crap I am experiencing.
