My recommendation is to keep OS X current, however whenever doing so it is wise to keep your applications current too. The first thing to look at is to see if your computer can even run Sierra, the most current version of Mac OS. The system requirements for Sierra are:

macOS Sierra requires at least 8GB of RAM and 8GB of storage space and will run on:

    • iMac: Late 2009 or newer.
    • MacBook: Late 2009 or newer.
    • MacBook Pro: Mid 2010 or newer.
    • MacBook Air: Late 2010 or newer.
    • Mac Mini: Mid 2010 or newer.
    • Mac Pro: Mid 2010 or newer.

It is also wise to look up all your apps in RoaringApps.com and see which apps need to be upgraded or replaced.

Also look over Sierra (Apple's website is the best reference) and see if it has features  you want.

Please read Upgrading to macOS "Sierra" without fear.

Sierra requires a minimum of 2 GB RAM. I recommend more than the minimum. 4 GB is adequate. More is always better.

You will need a minimum of 8.8 GB storage available to download and install Sierra.

Your pos states "Should I upgrade?", then, in your explanation, you state you NEED to upgrade.

Why do you NEED to upgrade your OS X.

"Should" and "need" are two different things.

Do you know the year of your iMac?
