iTunes Match glitch since iOS 10 - can't download

I use iTunes Match but not Apple Music. Since upgrading my iPhone 6 to iOS 10, many previously downloaded songs from my library are not there but are "available for download" - I see them but they do not download when I tap that icon, even if they were originally iTunes purchases. Sometimes if I play/stream them for a few seconds I can then download them - but usually not. All iPhone and iTunes Match settings are correct per other articles.

I tried downloading those very same songs on my old iPad 2 using iOS 9 (the songs were not already on there) - and it worked exactly as it should. Please help. Thank you.

Ok, thanks so much for this!!

While I too have a lot of songs in this state and not sure I want to spend the time correcting all of them, there are some songs that I just have to have available on my iPhone until Apple figures this out.

I'm so glad they were able to figure out at least a workaround for you. I spent over 4 hours on the phone with them last week and they never figured out a viable fix for me and I was still blindly waiting for a resolution when I found this page and your work-around.

I've spent a week trying all kinds of strategies to work-around, but never thought of this one.

I was having the same issue after just upgrading to an iPhone 7 and I just found a workaround that seems to work without a lot of pain.

1) Close all apps by double clicking the home button and dragging them off the screen

2) Power down the iPhone

3) Power up the iPhone

4) When the iPhone is on, go into iTunes Store, go to More > Puchased > Music > Not on this iPhone and select a song and click on the cloud symbol to the right

5) You should get prompted for your iTunes password.

I did this and my songs started downloading again. It hung up several times along the way and I had to repeat this process but eventually everything downloaded.

Not sure if this will help others with the problem but worth a try.

Hello leadoff04,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are having trouble downloading songs using iTunes Match. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend you read this article, it may be able to help troubleshoot the issue.

If you can't download, play, or access songs

Follow the steps below.

Check your Internet connection

Test the Internet connection on your iOS device or computer.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If can't connect to a Wi-Fi network, you can try using cellular data:

  1. Go to Settings > App and iTunes Stores.
  2. Turn on Use Cellular Data.

You might have to pay a fee to download over a cellular network. Contact your wireless carrier for details, and learn about cellular data settings and usage.

I have this issue as well. I have songs that have the iCloud download symbol next to them on my iOS 10 devices (iPhone and iPad). If I click on the song to play it it tries to play, but then gives up, or if I click on the icon to download it, the icon turns into a spinning circle, and then eventually gives up and goes back to the iCloud download symbol.

Oddly enough these songs are accessible on my MacBookPro and iMac. So definitely an iOS bug that is REALLY irritating.

Have exactly the same issue. I have tried to play/download tracks with UPLOADED iTunes Match status on all of my iOS devices (2 iPhones and an iPad) and Apple TV, the system tries to play/download these tracks but then just gives up. I have tried to remove downloads of the same tracks on my MacBook and download them again, everything works smoothly. I have found that the issue affects m4a format songs only. I am chasing Apple Support for three days now, no resolution so far. They are blaming that I am using iOS 10.2 beta, however the rest of my gadgets run production firmwares. Your assistance would be appreciated. The issue affects almost 40% of my music library.

I have the exact same problem. I have been using iTunes Match for a few years without any problems until I started the free three month trial to Apple Music, at least that is what I thought was the problem. Having read your question I'm wondering if in fact the cause is iOS 10 and not Apple Music. The symptoms that I get are exactly as you describe and in my case appear to be albums purchased from a different country iTunes store. Before iOS 10 and/or Apple Music trial these tracks were all matched or uploaded by iTunes Match and all could be streamed or downloaded to my iOS devices, but not anymore, they fail to download or skip to the next track when streaming. On investigating I noticed that all of my affected tracks are tracks that fail to get matched and are uploaded, even though the exact same album is available in both iTunes country stores. Sometimes it is one track on an album sometimes the whole album. Because of this problem I was thinking of ending my Apple Music trial, but maybe the cause is iOS 10? I additionally have the Apple Music problem that if I log out of my iTunes account on my iOS device, ALL downloads are deleted, even my iTunes matched or purchased tracks, which is very annoying! I've noticed though that any tracks that were downloaded to my iOS devices before I started the Apple Music trial or again maybe it's before iOS 10, do not get deleted. Very disappointed to have encountered these problems when iTunes Match had been working so well.
