Q: Photos library size reduced after Sierra upgrade

Prior to the Sierra upgrade my photos library was at 73 GB, now it's at 30 GB. I believe the total number of photos is still the same, nothing appears to be missing as far as I can tell. I do not use iCloud. What is the reason for the big reduction?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), macOS Sierra (10.12)

    What did you upgrade from?

Upgrading does not reduce the library unless there might have been unnecessary Caches in it - if the photo count is the same and the pixel size of the photos is the same then it is nothing that affects your photos

You say, you do not use iCloud, but check the preferences for iCloud nevertheless. perhaps you accidentally enabled iCloud Photo Library without noticing it?

the internal format of the Photos Library has changed after the upgrade to Photos 2.0. So the upgrade may have removed orphaned files from your library or cleaned it up in other ways.
