safari Preferences Not Opening

Hi All,

I cannot get Safari Preferences to open - when I click on this option I get the spinning coloured wheel and nothing happens. I have to force quit to get out of it. I'm using a Mac 27 Yosemite 10.10.5 and Safari 10.0

I've tried to delete the Library/preferences/com.apple.safari.plist from the go Folder option - and then restarting - which was some advice I found here - but doesn't seem to work.

I need to access this area as I need to change some security settings to run an Auskey update. Also want to change my home page away from popping up with Yahoo search engine ???

Any ideas?

Cheers

Andy

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferenes, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safe Mode - Yosemite

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hi Eric,

Unfortunately it didn't work - same condition. After restart I went straight to Safari to see if I could access the preferences drop down - but I couldn't. What I did notice though was when I opened safari it was trying to show a web page that was something to do with "Adblock" - I think this was a add in that I got from the app store a couple of months ago on recommendation from somewhere - but I've never seen Safari try to get to that page before today when I reopened after moving the Plist file. I moved the plist file back into the finder window and overwrote the new one as you suggested. So I'm probably back where I started now - with the additional info about "Adblock" - not sure if that is relevant.

Hi Eric,

I set up my wife as a login and tried Safari Preferences there - still no good. Just the spinning wheel.

So I tried a hard reboot. No difference.

So I tried the safe mode reboot - holding down the shift key as you suggested. Now I have a bigger problem. The machine won't boot up at all - the bar gets about a third of the way across the slot and then the machine just goes black screen and shuts down. I've had this three times now., - I can't get it to start. Really worrying....

It was working - all apart from my not being able to access as the preferences in safari - I could use the internet, excel work outlook etc - working fine. Now I can't get it to open. Is there a way I can force it open ?

Andy

1. Visit the site you want it be the Home page.

Safari > Preferences > General > Homepage

Click the button “Set to Current Page” button.

2. If this does’t help:

Use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac to remove adware.

https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

Download, install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.

Once done, quit Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Hi Eric,

I did the Command R restart - went to the disk utilities and did the check - the disc was "broken" so I did the repair - the response was that it couldn't be repaired and would need to be erased. So I erased it. Then when I rebooted I got just a picture of a file with a question mark in it. So I figured I'd use the recover from internet option - which I did - this then loaded up a copy of Mountain lion onto my machine. When I opened this and tried to do a restore from Time machine it wouldn't do it. So I used the upgrade tool and upgraded to Sierra. This completed over night and this morning I've command R booted again and selected restore from time machine. This time it's found the file from last Saturday morning and is restoring. It says it will take 42 hours - 938GB to do. I'm assuming when it gets done it will have restored all my ITunes, all my PHotos and all my files (I do hope so - I only have them on the Mac and on the Time machine). I'm also assuming that when the restore is complete, the problem with Safari will be "still there" as I'm restoring with a back up that must have contained the problem in the first place....SO after 2 days of waiting for it to rebuild I will be back where I started....I will see when it's finished restoring and see if I can access Safari Preferences - if I can't then I will start again with single use boot as you suggested before.

Regards

Andy
